  • Pharmacological effect Sumamigren

Sumatriptan, a specific selective agonist at the serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine-1 receptor (5HT1D), does not affect other subtypes of the serotonin 5HT receptor (5HT2-5HT7). 5HT1D receptors are located primarily in blood vessels in the brain and stimulation of these receptors narrows them. Sumatriptan numbs the trigeminal nerve. Both effects can underlie the antimigraine effect of a drug.

Clinical response is usually 30 minutes after ingestion.
