Azelastin, a derivative of phthalazinone, is a strong long-acting anti-allergic agent that selectively blocks H1 receptors. When applied to the mucous eye, there are additional anti-inflammatory and membrane-stabilizing effects of azelastin: azelastin inhibits the release of mediators of early and late phase allergic reactions, for example, leukotriene, histamine, platelet activation factor, reduces the number of ICAM-1 (molecule of intercellular adhesion 1) and eosinophil cells. Clinically significant effects on qt (zTc) interval have not been detected even with long-term use of high doses of azelastin.
