Progesterone is a hormone produced by the yellow body. It initiates the transition of uterine mucosa from the proliferative phase, which develops under the influence of FSH, to the secretory phase. In addition, progesterone reduces the excitability and contractility of the muscles of the uterus and tubes.
It also blocks hypothalamic secretion of factors responsible for the release of FSH and LH, inhibits pituitary gonadotropic hormone production, and interferes with ovulation.
In the vaginal gel-based Krainon®, progesterone is integrated into a polymer system that binds to the mucous membranes of the vagina, thus allowing for uniform release of progesterone for at least three days.
