Pharmacological effect Duphalac
It has a hyperosmotic laxative effect, stimulates intestinal peristalsis, improves absorption of phosphate and calcium salts, and promotes the removal of ammonium ions.
Lactulose is cleaved by the intestinal flora of the colon into low molecular weight organic acids, resulting in a decrease in pH and an increase in osmotic pressure and resulting increase in intestinal contents. These effects stimulate bowel movement and affect the consistency of stool. As a result, the physiologic rhythm of large-bowel emptying is restored.
In hepatic encephalopathy, the effect is attributed to suppression of proteolytic bacteria by increasing the number of acidophilic bacteria (eg, lactobacilli), passage of ammonia to an ion form by acidification of the colon contents, bowel emptying by lowering colonic pH and osmotic effects, and reduction of nitrogen-containing toxic substances by stimulating bacteria that utilize ammonia for bacterial protein synthesis.
Lactulose as a prebiotic enhances the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, while inhibiting the growth of potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as clostridium spp. and escherichia coli, becomes possible, providing a more favorable balance of intestinal flora.
Indications Duphalac:
- Constipation: regulation of the physiological rhythm of bowel movements;
- Softening of stool for medical purposes (hemorrhoids, post-operation condition on colon and anal area);
- Hepatic encephalopathy in adults: treatment and prevention of hepatic coma or precoma.
Method of use, course and dosage Duphalac
The preparation is intended for oral or rectal administration.
Lactulose solution can be taken either diluted or undiluted.
Doses should be selected individually, swallowed at a single dose immediately, without delay.
When a daily dose is given, it is recommended that it be taken at the same time as, for example, breakfast. While taking laxatives, people should consume enough fluids (1.5 to 2 liters a day).
Use a measuring glass enclosed in the package to accurately dose the drug in vials. When using teabags, tear off a corner and immediately consume the content.
The dose that is taken to treat constipation or to soften stools medically can be taken immediately or divided into two doses using a measuring cup. After a few days, the starting dose can be adjusted depending on the drug reaction, and laxative effects may be desired up to 2-3 days after starting treatment.
