Pharmacological effect Gaviscon:

Gaviscon® Double Action is a combination of alginate and antacids (calcium carbonate and sodium hydrogen carbonate).

When ingested, the active substances of the drug react quickly with the acidic content of the stomach. This forms an alginate gel, which has an almost neutral pH value. The gel forms a protective barrier on the surface of the stomach contents, preventing the appearance of gastroesophageal reflux. In the case of regurgitation, the gel is more likely to enter the oesophagus, where it reduces mucous membrane irritation.

Calcium carbonate quickly neutralizes the hydrochloric acid of gastric juice, easing the sensation of heartburn and digestive disturbance. This effect is enhanced by the presence of hydrogen carbonate in the composition of the sodium preparation, which also has a neutralizing effect. The total acid-neutralizing activity of the preparation in the minimum dose (2 tabs.) is approximately 10 mEcv.
