Clinical-pharmacological group: anthelmintic drug Mebendazole
Pharmacotherapeutic group: Anthelmintics; drugs for treating nematodoses; benzimidazole derivative

Pharmacological effect Mebendazole

A broad-spectrum anthelmintic agent; most effective for pinworm infection. It causes irreversible disruption of glucose utilization in the helminth and inhibits ATP synthesis.

Pharmacokinetics of this drug
show almost zero absorption from the gastrointestinal tract. About 90% of the active ingredient binds to plasma proteins. Its distribution to organs is uneven, resulting in accumulation of helminths in adipose tissues, liver, and larvae. The liver metabolizes the drug to a 2-amino derivative. Half-life is between 2.5 and 5.5 hours. More than 90% of the dose is excreted unchanged in stool, whereas 5 to 10% of the absorbed portion is excreted through the kidneys.

How to use Mebendazole

The dosing regimen and method of administration for a particular drug depend on the formulation and other factors. The doctor determines the optimal dosing regimen, which must be carefully adjusted to the form being used and the indications for use.

Adults and children over ten years of age are given a single dose of 100 mg to treat pinworm infection.
For children aged 2 to 10 years, enterobiasis is treated with a single dose of 25 to 50 mg. In the case of an increased probability of reinfestation, the preparation is repeated in two to four weeks at the same dose.
Treatment of all family members at the same time is recommended.

Ascaridosis, trichuriasis, hookworm infection, teniosis, strongyloidosis, and mixed helminths are treated with a dose of 100 mg in the morning and evening for three days. In trichinosis, 200 to 400 mg is given three times a day for three days, and from day 4 to 10, 400 to 500 mg is given 3 times a day. Echinococcosis is treated with 500 mg twice a day for the first 3 days, followed by 500 mg 3 times a day for the next 3 days. Subsequent doses are 25 to 30 mg/kg/day in 3 to 4 doses.
