Pharmacological effect melatonin
Melatonin is a synthetic version of a hormone that is synthesized in the epiphysis. Usually, the pineal body produces melatonin according to daily rhythms: at night, its level in plasma reaches the maximum, and during the day - the minimum.
Light signals are sensed by the retina and enter the suprachiasmatic nucleus via the retinohypothalamic tract. Information is then transferred to the upper cervical ganglia, where norepinephrine, which secretes the sympathetic nerves, promotes melatonin synthesis. The presence of light, in turn, inhibits the production of this hormone.
Any disturbance in melatonin synthesis can result in decreased melatonin levels and disrupted circadian rhythms. Causes of melatonin deficiency include
Excessive exposure to artificial light, particularly blue tones (such as those from gadget screens), at night
Sleep disturbances due to endogenous and exogenous factors.
Older age.
Perimenopause and postmenopause in women
Harmful habits (smoking and alcohol).
Certain drugs (eg, NSAIDs, beta-blockers, benzodiazepines) may be taken.
Melatonin contributes to the normalization of circadian rhythms, has an adequate sedative and sleep-inducing effect. It increases GABA and serotonin levels in the brain by regulating sleep and wakefulness cycles as well as diurnal activity and body temperature. Its use improves cognitive and emotional state, promotes sleep quality, accelerates the process of falling asleep and reduces the number of night awakenings. At the same time, melatonin regulates neuroendocrine functions and reduces stress reactions, helping people sensitive to weather changes. Melatonin is not addictive.
