Scientists Allow Pregnant Women to Drink Coffee

For many years, expectant mothers were urged to avoid coffee. And limit any caffeinated drinks

But coffee can be safer for expectant mothers than previously thought, according to a study involving tens of thousands of women and their children.
This finding contradicts previous studies and decades-old recommendations by health services in many countries that encourage women to either limit their caffeine intake or eliminate it altogether.
Now research by Australian scientists shows that some of these fears about caffeine are overblown and underpinned by strong evidence. However, they added that women should still follow the recommendations regarding the daily use of caffeine.

Scientists at the University have studied the data of tens of thousands of Norwegian families. They chose this group because of the Scandinavians' shared love of coffee and lack of stigmatization of pregnant women and coffee use. The experts analyzed both the genetic data of the families and the questionnaires on coffee consumption during pregnancy.

They also surveyed parents on child development to explore the potential relationship between coffee use during pregnancy and the impact on social, motor and language skills of children up to the age of eight. Dr. Gunn-Helen Mohen, an expert in molecular biology, said, "Our analysis found no association between coffee use during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental problems in children."
This contrasts with previous studies that link caffeine use by expectant mothers to delayed development in infants. Dr. Mohen stated that previous studies on the topic had failed to determine whether caffeine was the cause of these problems or whether it was other potential factors that could affect the fetus during pregnancy, such as alcohol or tobacco use or improper nutrition.
A new study has avoided this confluence of causes, using participants’ genetic screening to identify those most likely to drink coffee.

6 coffee alternatives for expectant mothers

Discussions about the safety of drinking coffee during pregnancy continue to evolve, particularly in relation to its caffeine content. Some studies suggest that taking 200 mg of caffeine a day is safe, while others advise eliminating caffeine completely from the diet. However, regardless of your position or the opinion of your doctor, sometimes you want to diversify the selection of hot drinks.
