Pharmacological effect dexamethasone

Dexamethasone, used in ophthalmology, is a topical corticosteroid. It has a pronounced anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic and anti-exudative effect. By interacting with protein receptors in tissues, the drug regulates the expression of corticosteroid-dependent genes, which affects protein synthesis. This results in decreased formation, release, and activity of inflammatory mediators such as histamine, kinins, prostaglandins, and lysosomal enzymes.

Dexamethasone inhibits cell migration to the site of inflammation, reduces vasodilation and vascular permeability, stabilizes lysosomal enzymes in white blood cell membranes. It also suppresses antibody synthesis, impairs antigen recognition, and inhibits release of interleukins 1 and 2, as well as γ-interferon from lymphocytes and macrophages.

The drug induces lipocortin formation, inhibits release of inflammatory mediators by eosinophils, and stabilizes mast cell membranes. These effects contribute to the suppression of inflammatory reactions in tissues caused by mechanical, chemical or immune damage. The duration of anti-inflammatory effect of the drug after instillation of one drop is from four to eight hours.

Indications for use dexamethasone:
