Tetracycline 1% is a sterile, anti-bacterial ophthalmic medication designed to combat localized bacterial infections of the eye structures. Each gram of the ointment contains 10 mg of active Tetracycline Hydrochloride, expertly blended into a specialized, non-gritty petrolatum and lanolin base that ensures prolonged contact with the ocular surface. The active compound blocks bacterial protein synthesis by binding to microbial ribosomal subunits, successfully preventing the reproduction and spread of susceptible pathogens.
Due to its high viscosity, this ophthalmic formula provides a sustained soothing layer inside the eyelid, offering long-lasting antimicrobial defense. It distributes evenly across the cornea and conjunctiva with blinking, shielding delicate tissues from secondary complications while accelerating natural healing.
Key Uses & Target Symptoms
- Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Clears common bacterial eye infections, easing redness, itching, and crusty discharge.
- Blepharitis Care: Targets bacterial accumulation along the edges of the eyelids to relieve swelling and irritation.
- Sty Management (Meibomitis): Accelerates the clearance of acute inflammatory blockages in the eyelid oil glands.
- Keratitis & Ocular Protection: Minimizes risk of deeper corneal infections and treats chlamydial eye conditions like trachoma.
Main Benefits
- Prolonged Ocular Contact: The specialized sterile ointment base prevents the medication from washing out quickly with tears.
- Broad Antibacterial Range: Highly effective against a wide variety of both gram-positive and gram-negative micro-organisms.
- Non-Irritating Base: Specially purified and melted smoothly to prevent mechanical irritation or friction on inflamed eye tissues.
How to Use
- Preparation: Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water before handling the tube. Cleanse the eyelids of any crust or discharge using warm water.
- Administration: Gently tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze a thin strip (0.5 to 1 cm) of ointment into the pocket.
- Safety Rule: Avoid letting the tip of the tube touch your eye, eyelashes, or fingers to prevent contamination. Close the eye and blink several times to distribute the ointment.
- Frequency & Course: Apply 3 to 4 times daily for standard infections, or once at night for a sty. Standard courses last 5 to 7 days, though severe conditions like trachoma may require longer use.
- Important Note: Temporary blurred vision for 5 to 10 minutes is completely normal after application. Do not wear contact lenses until the infection is entirely cleared.
