Pharmaco-therapeutic group Ciprofloxacin:

Antimicrobial agent, fluoroquinolone.

Pharmacological properties Ciprofloxacin:

A broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent of the fluoroquinolone group. Has a bactericidal effect. Suppresses DNA gyrase and inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA.

It is highly active against most gram-negative bacteria: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Neisseria meningitidis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Active against Staphylococcus spp. (including strains producing and not producing penicillinase, methicillin-resistant strains), some strains of Enterococcus spp., Campylobacter spp., Legionella spp., Mycoplasma spp., Chlamydia spp., Mycobacterium spp.

Ciprofloxacin is active against β-lactamase-producing bacteria.

Ureaplasma urealyticum, Clostridium difficile, Nocardia asteroides are resistant to ciprofloxacin. The action against Treponema pallidum is not well understood.

Indications for use Ciprofloxacin:

Infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to ciprofloxacin, incl. diseases of the respiratory tract, abdominal cavity and pelvic organs, bones, joints, skin; septicemia; severe infections of ENT organs. Treatment of postoperative infections. Prevention and treatment of infections in patients with reduced immunity.

For topical use: acute and subacute conjunctivitis, blepharoconjunctivitis, blepharitis, bacterial corneal ulcers, keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis, chronic dacryocystitis, meibomitis. Infectious lesions of the eyes after trauma or foreign bodies. Preoperative prophylaxis in ophthalmic surgery.

Mode of application Ciprofloxacin:

Locally.
In ophthalmology: for mild to moderately severe infections, eye drops are instilled 1-2 drops into the lower conjunctival sac of the affected eye (or both eyes) every 4 hours, for severe infections - 2 drops every hour. After improvement of the condition, the dose and frequency of instillation are reduced. With a bacterial corneal ulcer - 1 drop every 15 minutes for 6 hours, then 1 drop every 30 minutes during waking hours; on day 2 - 1 drop every hour during waking hours; from 3 to 14 days - 1 drop every 4 hours during waking hours.
In otorhinolaryngology: the external auditory canal is carefully cleaned. It is recommended that the solution be used at room or body temperature to avoid vestibular stimulation. The drug is instilled into the external auditory canal. The recommended dose is 3-4 drops 2-4 times a day or more often, depending on the need. The patient should lie on the side opposite the affected ear for 5-10 minutes after instillation. In isolated cases, after local cleansing, a cotton swab moistened with a solution of ciprofloxacin can be placed in the ear, in the external auditory canal; the tampon may remain in the ear canal until the next procedure. Basically, the duration of treatment should not exceed 5-10 days. In some cases, the treatment can be extended if the local flora is sensitive.

Contraindications Ciprofloxacin:

Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, viral and fungal lesions of the eyes, pregnancy, lactation, children under 1 year of age.
With caution
Solution in the form of eye drops is not intended for intraocular injection.
When using other ophthalmic drugs, the interval between their administration should be at least 15 minutes.

Side effects Ciprofloxacin:

Allergic reactions, itching and burning in the eye, mild soreness and hyperemia of the conjunctiva, nausea, rarely - edema of the eyelids, photophobia, lacrimation, sensation of a foreign body in the eyes, an unpleasant taste in the mouth immediately after instillation, decreased visual acuity, the appearance of a white crystalline precipitate in patients with corneal ulcer, keratitis, keratopathy, corneal infiltration, development of superinfection.

Drug interactions:

There is evidence that the systemic use of some quinolones leads to an increase in the concentration of theophylline in the blood plasma, enhances the effect of indirect anticoagulants (including warfarin and its derivatives).
